As the Scriptures say…(49)
The risen Lord is revealed
This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead (John 21:14)
JESUS APPEARED TO INDIVIDUALS AND GROUP OF PEOPLE
- Jesus appeared to the women disciples namely, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James the younger (John 20:16-17, Matt.28:9-10, Mk. 15:40)
- Jesus appeared to Cleopas and another disciple on Emmaus road (Luke 24:17-19)
- Jesus appeared to Simon (Luke 24:34)
- Jesus appeared to 500 of people at a mountain in Galilee (Matt.28:17, 1 Cor.15:6)
- Jesus appeared to his brother James (1 Cor.15:7)
- Jesus appeared to His Disciples leading them to Olive Mount (Acts 1:6-12)
- Jesus appeared to Saul on Damascus road (Acts 9)
JESUS REVEALED HIMSELF TO HIS DISCIPLES AS RECORDED IN THE GOSPEL JOHN
- The first time Jesus revealing Himself to His Disciples (John 20:19-23)
- The second time Jesus revealing Himself to His Disciples (John 20:24-29)
- The third time Jesus revealing Himself to His Disciples (John 21:1-14)
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF JESUS’ REVEALING HIMSELF AFTER HIS RESURRECTION
- Jesus had to appear to His disciples to prove to them that He was raised from the dead as He had already told them in advance
- Jesus had to appear to His Disciples to teach them about Him from the Scriptures (Luke 24)
- Jesus had to confront His disciples’ doubts and struggles to believe that He is the risen Lord, as was the case with Thomas also known as the Twin
- The Disciples needed much further teaching from the Lord Himself as to how they would be His witnesses (Luke 24 and Acts 1)
- All of these revelatory events of Jesus after His resurrection stand as the unmistakable proof of His resurrection
Jesus was revealed to His Disciples after having been raised from the dead. The Disciples of Jesus were further enlightened about who Jesus was as He resurrected from the grave. The fact of His resurrection changed the lives of the Disciples so remarkably. They had become courageous and zealous for the Lord and His name. That is why, according to the tradition, most, if not all, of the first Disciples were killed for their faith in Christ Jesus. We have no need of such historical appearing of the Lord Jesus as a proof of His resurrection. The transformed lives of the Disciples were that proof.
